Meg was staring at Anna as if she were quite mad. ‘London?’ she said. ‘We can’t go to London.’

‘Why not?’ Anna asked. ‘It’s only a couple of hours away. I'm sure my car's up to the challenge if you are’

‘But what would William say?’

‘William’s away,’ Anna pointed out again.

For a while, Meg didn’t say anything and Anna continued driving but she could feel that the atmosphere inside the car had changed. It was as though she and Meg had tuned into the same wavelength and, all of a sudden, knew each other’s minds. She took a quick look at her. She was smiling.

‘We should go, shouldn’t we?’ Meg said.

Anna smiled, feeling a great bubble of excitement rising in her stomach. ‘I’m afraid I don’t have any provisions.’

‘We can get some. What do we need?’ Meg asked.

‘Everything. Clothes, cosmetics–’

‘We can buy some.’

‘Yes. We can. This can be a kind of holiday. I haven’t had a holiday for ages.’

Meg’s hand disappeared into a pocket of her jacket. ‘Will this help?’

Anna gasped as she saw a roll of twenty pound notes. ‘Where did you get that?’

‘When you’ve lived as long as I have, you learn to save and I've been saving this for a special occasion. Even William doesn't know about it.’

Anna laughed. ‘Well, we’ll be able to find a nice hotel for that.’

‘And make sure you take some for petrol too. It’s not cheap, is it?’

‘Meg, you’re amazing!’ Anna said. ‘However did I manage before you came along?’

‘People are always saying that to me. I often wonder too.’

‘You must’ve had a lot of adventures.’

‘One or two,’ she said.

‘And you’ll have to tell me all about them,’ Anna said.

‘Is this what this trip’s really about?’

‘What do you mean?’

‘You getting me away from William so you can ask me lots of questions?’

‘I didn’t plan a trip to London,’ Anna said. ‘I may have planned a trip out this afternoon. I wanted to see you again. You’re interesting, Meg. You surely must realise that.’

‘And I’d be happy to answer any of your questions.’

‘You would?’

‘Of course. I’ve got nothing else to do, have I?’

‘Oh!’ Anna suddenly cried. ‘What about Cocoa and Beanie?’

Meg shook her head. ‘Don’t worry. Mrs Boothby is going to pop back tonight to let them out.’

Anna looked anxious. ‘But won’t she check up on you and raise the alarm?’

‘No, no. I left my bedroom light on and she tends not to disturb me.’

‘Really?’

‘She knows I like my independence,’ Meg said.

Anna sighed in relief and grinned from ear to ear. ‘Great,’ she said. ‘Oh, Meg! We’re going to have such a great time. Just wait and see.’
